Across the street from the corner tower of the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery is the five-domed Smolensk Church. In the old days, on this place, near the walls of the Euthymius monastery, the monastery settlement "Skuchilikha" was located.

Short story

It was inhabited by peasants taken out of the dominated estates. Here, in the settlement, the monastery craftsmen and masons erected two pairs of wooden churches - the winter Church of Simeon the Stylite and the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, which served as a summer temple for the parishioners of the monastery settlement. In 1696 - 1706, a stone church was built on the site of the wooden Smolensk church..

At the beginning of the 18th century, there were 59 households and 389 souls in the parish of the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, and the income from the lease of church lands, the sale of candles and other sources amounted to 650 rubles a year (at that time, a considerable amount). At the end of the 18th century, a bell tower in the style of provincial classicism was erected between the winter and summer churches, thus completing this magnificent architectural complex. Currently, the former settlement is part of Suzdal, and its churches - Smolenskaya and in the name of Simeon the Stylite - are located on the main street of the city - Lenin.

Architecture of the Smolensk Church

The basis of the Smolensk Church is a massive cubic volume, covered with a powerful vault with striking above the windows... The sloping roof of the one-story building is crowned with thin, graceful drums topped with domes. The plane of the roof from the vertical plane of the walls separates the cornice of teeth, chiseled posts and small kokoshniks.

The windows, located high on the walls, are framed with trims made of figured semi-columns and "beads", and on the northern facade the decoration of the trims is more elegant. Since trade carts were passing through the settlement, the Smolensk Church "met" guests from Yaroslavl, which explains the richer decor of the northern facade of the temple. The southern facade has no entrance, the door portal is arranged on the north side.
